Somewhere, probably in this thread, it is my understanding that there were 78 out of 1000 men who survived to the end of the war.
My ancestor, Sgt. J. D. Pearce, was one of those having been wounded at Shiloh. He was "shot through and through." He was in charge
of the powder and firing the cannon I believe and later a gunsmith in Arkansas.
You really need to go the Old Historic Museum of Arkansas and see the flags shown at the Battle of Colors, I think it is.
There were actually two books in the works about the 8th but neither has been finished.
One took one slant and the other took another slant.
These men with the 8th truthfully were all shot to pieces.
