I am doing research on the history of my great grandfather, Charles Louis Roach, of Arkansas County, Arkansas . According to family records he enlisted in Company I, 8th Arkansas Infantry in 1861, and served until the end of the Civil War. An article I obtained, written by one of his neices, stated that he was wounded in the leg at the battle of Shiloh. His obituary, written by his second wife Daisy, reads as follows: "when sixteen years of age, Mr. Roach enlisted in the southern army and no braver soldier ever faced the enemy. At the great battle of Chicamauga, in company of his captain, Gibson himself, his captain, G.T Crow, Joe Henderson, and Grason Shackelford all fell wounded, with their faces to the foe. Theirs was the only line that held their ground in that great battle." Other family writings I have, describe his life in Arkansas County during the Reconstruction Period and his dealings with Carpet Baggers. Can anyone direct me to a source where I might learn all that is available on this man and those he served with? I have read the history of the 8th Arkansas Infantry, have obtained the record of his Wife Daisy's application for a pension after his death as well as those records available at the Arkansas History Commission (mostly muster records), but these records are lacking and I would like to know more. Are there records of his injury at Shiloh, did he take an oath at the conclusion of the war, etc? Thank you in advance. De opresso Liber
