Date: Thursday, 14 February 2002, 5:03 pm In Response To: D.M. Johnson co.L, A 30th Arkansas Inf. (Raymond Gross) Gainesville is in Greene County. The record doesn't say what D. M. stands for, but here is some information that should help you figure out if this is the man you're looking for.

D. M. Johnson enlisted in Co. L, 30th Arkansas Infantry, at Oak Bluff, Arkansas (in present-day Clay County), on April 17, 1862. He was transferred to Co. A on September 8, 1862, when Cos. A and L were consolidated. He was reported as a deserter and dropped from the rolls on February 28, 1863, but reenlisted at Gainesville on April 19, 1863, returned to duty, and served with his command to the end of the war. He applied for a Confederate pension from Greene County in 1897. His widow Nancy M. Johnson applied for a pension in 1909, stating that he had died on February 21, 1908.

If this turns out to be your man, let me know so I can update my database with his full name. Thanks.

By the way, in case you're interested, McNeill's/Hart's 30th Arkansas was a "heavy" regiment -- 14 companies! "A" through "O" -- that was reduced to the normal complement of 10 companies by consolidation on September 8, 1862. Except for the short-lived "Hindman Legion" in 1861, no other Arkansas regiment was anywhere near the size of the original 30th Arkansas. Must have had one heckuva recruiting officer.
