BG.Hay's LA Tiger, new flag found!

I was reading the book "The Louisiana Tigers, in the Gettysburg Campaign" June-July 1863. By Scott L. Mingus, SR.

On page, 159..."The Tiger's Flag! What a scramble as the flag was torn to pieces! Our boys pounced on the rag as if a piece of it would be the greatest badge of bravery they would ever get their hands on. [Private] Andrew Jackson got the biggest piece. He shoved it into his pocket. He kept it as long as he lived, and gave it to one of his sons."

The 75th Ohio captured the 9th LA's Flag. The 9th LA briefly withdrew down the hill. A second charge by the 9th LA, captured the 75th Ohio's flag. "We lost our flag and never got another" (Page 159) (75th Ohio).

Here is the best news of all....On page 171.

The 8th LA got revenge for losing their flag, they captured......"Wiedrich New York, Battery Guidon". "Private Nathan Holmes Willis, a twenty-eight-year-old from Alexandria, Louisiana, engineer who had been born in Canaan, New Hampshire.(Captured the flag). The flag may have been cut up for souvenirs."

"One week after the attack on East Cemetery Hill, Private J. Arthur Taylor of Company F, wrote his father a brief synopsis of the results". "We too the hill and the artillery, but having no support were obliged to fall back. Our regiment lost its flag, but brought out a Yankee flag in return, a piece of which I encloe in this letter."

The author did not know what "Four Flags" BG. Hays captured. So with this new flag, I believe this...

1) 75th Ohio---Yes and confirmed
2) Wiedrich New York Battery Guidon Flag/Battery Flag-----Yes and now confirmed (Battery "I", 1st NY) (From Buffalo, NY)
3) 107th Ohio---Yes and not yet confirmed
4) 25th Ohio----Logical guess

Now, Rickett's Battery almost lost their Battery flag, (Page 169) "He spotted a Rebel clutching the battery guidon and leading a captured Federal horse. In the darkness and chaos, "The fellow was trying to make off with both." I felt for my revolver, but found it gone just when I needed it most. I determined that I would not let that fellow steal our flag nor capture the horse, so I picked up a stone and kocked him to the earth with that. Lieutenant Brockway, continued, I pounced on him and grabbed the flag out of his hands, and as I lifted it up into the air, the staff was shot in two while I waved it aloft. I did not care for the stick, but I was mighty glad to save that guidon."

On the 8th Louisiana flag captured (107th Ohio captured the flag), I checked the end notes and found this interesting.

"The flag eventually made its way to the Grand Army of the Republic's post in Auburn, New York, where it was kept until 1941. When the post closed, an attempt was made to return the flag to Louisiana, but that effort failed and the flag disappeared."

"Arthur Duchamp, wounded in the wrist at Gettysburg, was killed at Spotsylvania on May 11th, 1864, while carrying the regiment's replacement colors. " (8th LA).

Hay's Brigade lost: 8th LA Flag and 9th LA flag.

Well everyone, that is all the book had on this subject, huge help.

Have a good day!

Shawn
