Re: BG.Hay's LA Tiger, new flag found!

On Cemetery Hill, opposite the gate house, the Tigers shot down and/or bayonetted members of the left piece of Captain R. Bruce Rickett's battery (F, 1st Pennsylvania Artillery) located close to the wall there, and then spiked the piece. A handful of Louisiana soldiers made it as far as the second and third pieces of the battery from the left--these cannon were all protected by shallow lunettes (earthworks). Just in rear of the third piece, or about 160 feet from the Baltimore Pike, a "Tiger" was knocked down with a rock thrown by Lt. Brockway. Sgt. Stratford then shot the fellow with his own gun, and was about to club the stricken man when Ricketts intervened to stop him. In a separate incident about the same time and place (which I calculate was about 7:52 pm in the very dim remaining light), James H. Riggin, the battery's guidon bearer, staggered up and fell against Ricketts, saying "Help me, Captain." Riggin had been shot in the stomach after trying to prevent a Confederate officer from capturing the guidon, which had been set in the works of the second gun from the left. Riggin reportedly had just shot the officer with a pistol, but I'm not sure how this fact could have been communicated, since Riggin died soon afterwards and was buried the next day alongside two other men from the battery. The above story is pieced together from separate sources. After the war, the lunettes were dug deeper and I understand they are still there today, so one can stand at the very spot where the struggle over the battery's guidon occurred.
