Re: Flag of 75th OVI at Gettysburg

Wayne,

I am not sure where that quote comes from. George Benson Fox of the 75th Ohio does not mention loss of the flag in a 4 July letter written to his father. Other letters by Fox are reportedly preserved by the Cincinnati Historical Society. Nor does Oscar Ladley mention the flag loss (in the book, Hearth and Knapsack: The Ladley Letters, 1857-1880). Incidentally, a little off topic, but I have just found a wonderfully detailed description of the 6th North Carolina's movements and assault against Cemetery Hill. It dovetails nicely with an account from the 41st New York which had its left flank driven back at the base of the hill, and I have prepared battle maps showing just how it was done. The 6th North Carolina broke through immediately below Battery L, 1st New York's position. The account is a very important piece of the puzzle, at least to me, on what the Confederates achieved on that hill. The 6th North Carolina held the ground in the vicinity for several minutes and pulled out moments before Carroll's brigade charged down to the wall they had just held.
