Re: Rare 19th South Carolina (Macon Arsenal flag)

Hello,

Tom is correct in stating that the ANV battle flag, or any CS battle flag pattern for that matter, would not be flown from a building. Those would have been one of the national flags - the battle flags were for the troops. There is one Civil War artist that consistently still shows ANV flags flying from buildings to my great irritation.

The depots either made the flags themselves (Richmond - via women who came there to pick up the flag kits to take home and sew) or issued contracts to local flag makers (Charleston, Augusta and Mobile). Bob Davis finding the Macon Depot payrolls shows that they followed the Richmond Depot route.

With regards to movies getting flags right - they almost always miss the mark. "Gettysburg" had maybe 3 or 4 correct ANV flags (the rest were 4th Bunting issues) and they showed Second National flags all over when only one has been documented to have been there (Lee's army does not get them until the Fall of 1863 after a new bunting shipment arrives).

I was going to be flag adviser to a new CW film beginning production as we speak until I found out that this was for screen credits only. That does not keep a roof over my head so I declined. Having lived in LA for 15 years and had friends in the film business I know that Hollywood has more money than God and that even dorks standing on a set holding duct tape get paid. So I told them that after spending thousands of my own dollars traveling the country researching flags over the last 23 years that I thought that it was time to get paid for that knowledge but they did not budget for that. So God knows what the flags will be like now. I even had some of the minor patterns set for big screen debut like the Bowen/Missouri pattern for the Vicksburg scenes. Oh well - their loss!

The script was well done by the way although I did tweak some things for them.
