I haven't kept up with this board in a long while and it looks like I've missed some interesting discussions. Earlier today my wife was able to track down some relatives that fought with the 5th Texas Infantry, and I was going to post some findings, but after seeing this thread I find that I have many questions, and maybe someone has some answers.

Long story short, my wife's 4x Great Grandfather was Pvt. Oates of Co. K...he died June 18th 1863. While looking, we found that his brother was a Sgt. with Co. K, and is listed in records as being appointed Color Sgt. for the 5th Texas in summer of 1863 (no specific date, pretty much post-Gettysburg). In fact his grave stone also lists him as Color Sgt as well...I'll add the links to show the stone and the listing for Nathan Oates below this paragraph.

Roster lists as: OATS, NATHAN Orig. Pvt., Co. K: Prom., lCpl., Feb.10, 1862: W., 2nd Manassas (Aug.30, 1862): Detailed to Tex. on recruiting serv., Feb.-Apr., 1863: Appt. SSgt., June 22, 1863: Transfd. to Regmtl. Hdqtrs. As Color-Sgt., Summer, 1863: K., Chickamauga (Sept.19, 1863).

As you can see, this is interesting information, and yet it does not mesh well with what was listed in the previous post. I'm wondering if anyone has any further information that might fill in the gaps with this story. Ken, I tagged you with this post because I found this post http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=116&p=topics.Military.united-20-states.civwar.tn.tn where you also came across the name of Nathan Oates as Color Sgt. for the 5th Texas and I was wondering if you ever found more information to go along with that. So this should be interesting, I have my own thoughts on what happened, but before I say anything I'd like to see if anyone else has ideas or information. Thanks.
