Re: Ensign 5th Texas Infantry ?? 4 Ken Legendre

1st Sgt. Evans retrieved the flag from the mortally wounded Color Corporal J. A. Howard, retaining them through the remainder of the action at Gettysburg, July 2/3, 63'. Thereafter, Pvt. William A. Clark was appointed Color Bearer July 14, 1863, subsequently promoted Ensign May 6, 1864.

I do not believe that a 1st/Orderly Sergeant would ever be reduced to the position of Color Sergeant, etc.

William S. Evans, 1st Sergeant, Capt. K. Bryan's Company Texas Volunteers,* enlisted July 11, 1861 in Harrisburg, Texas by Capt. K. Bryan for the war, recorded absent on the July/Aug., 1862 muster roll, "sick in Richmond since about 4 July '62," subsequently sent to Richmond, sick Sept. 28, 1862 remaining so through the end of year, returned to duty January 17, 1863, killed in action September 20, 1863

* This company subsequently became Company F, 5th Texas Infantry
