Josh & George,
Despite my head-start; I have found very little
concerning Nathan Oates.
The inscription on his tombstone excepted; the
only reference I have found naming him as Color-
Sgt. is a 1987 publication entitled "There Never
Were Such Men Before: Polk County 1861-65"
by Ruth Peebles (pg. 368).
The same publication contained a April 1862
letter from Nathan. The letter makes no mention
of the Color Guard.
