Heres some further information from Cathy received today. I had asked here to compare the bunting of two of several so called hospital flags also captured at Waynesboro. These flags are all red or blue and I cant find anything on any site similar. Heres her report

This morning I examined WDs 253 and 256. I believe they are the same fabric as the Richmond Depot flags. We have a good list of flags produced by the other depots (Staunton, Charleston, Augusta, and Mobile), but no such list for Richmond Depot flags. Possibly it was assumed that, if a flag wasn’t produced at one of those four depots and it was an ANV flag, it was likely produced by the Richmond Depot.
In any case, I compared WDs 253 and 256 to several other Virginia regimental ANV battle flags, not produced at the other four depots, and flags noted as being produced by other depots. Among the believed-Richmond-Depot flags chosen for comparison’s sake were WD 37 (1st VA Infantry, captured at Gettysburg), and WD 273 (9th Virginia Infantry, captured at Five Forks). The fabrics of WDs 37 and 273 were very similar, perhaps even identical, to the fabrics in WDs 253 and 256: a fairly tight weave on both, and a bright shade of red. The non-Richmond-Depot flags tended to be much more loosely woven, and the reds were a more muted shade.
The next time you’re in Richmond, if you’d like to schedule a time to come examine and compare some of these flags, I’d be glad to make them available to you.
