Re: Staunton Depot Flags. New Information

Greg
... Sure... give me a couple days so I can put my hand written piles of notes into something better decipherable, so as to make sence to anyone else... If there is a published list of these folks already out there I havent found/seen one. What I currently have I have personally compiled from going through the records themselves and attempting to reconstruct a roster of sorts from information gleaned thereof. I think Ive found all the primaries, but there were lots of subordinates that briefly came and went through there too. I have already gone through the CSR/Officer files of those thus far found to have been associated with Staunton. Many files obviously fragmented with noted time gaps. Nothing flag related found in them.

Unfortunately I dont have any advantages such as whatever documents or leads that might have been contained in Madus files and notes. So working blind into the record file abyss to maybe rediscover whatever he originally found... or maybe even find some new related evidence. Not going into it with a preconception to prove or disprove any specific given claim or account. Seek out whatever evidence there might be out there and let that just speak for itself...

Other notes....

Lynchburg we can probably discount... It only had a small QM office there that the sole QM officer there wrote in a letter in Feb 1865 (Had been there since Oct61) that his duties predominately only was serving and supplying the several local hospitals and convalescent camps. He also gave reference to sending on gathered raw materials mustered up locally (mostly hides) to Richmond. He also stated that all his goods came from Richmond, little if anything procured locally other than fuel (firewood). Nothing noted in regards to exchanges of goods or equipment to or from Staunton with them or anyone else that Ive found yet...

Im currently going through all the units associated with Whartons Division. Each respective Regiment and Brigade... very time consuming so will take some time.... The respective QM's werent the only ones making requisitions for gear, that you would normally expect.... some of the units didnt even have a functioning QM present for wide gaps of time... so had to greatly expand the research scope so hopefully wouldnt miss anything.... Some of the units within late war had spent periodic time in with the ANV as well as the deep recesses of western and SW Va.... Hense found evidence of some units having dealings with other smaller regional depots at Dublin, Wytheville, Bristol (no pun intended) and even eastern Tenn.... (Gathering up QM data for those places as well as I go along)

I still have tons of files to go through... but thus far have found one flag invoice of one of the target regiments. But Its slightly earlier than the time frame we are looking for, and most likely is the flag they reportedly lost at Winchester... Research continues.....
