For weeks after the battle, the Confederates found a lot of Union stuff. I read that some men of Wheat's Battalion did a knife attack on the 11th New York. I dont know how many men were involved in this but it could not have been many. (This was after Wheat was wounded) and everyone was scattered.

I agree with you also that I dont believe they captured a flag during the morning fight. Where could we find letters from Wheat's men? That might be the key to all of this. Since there is no OR report or any reports from Wheat's Battalion at 1st Manassas.

Do you all remember my old post of the "Returned Battle flags from the War Department"? With the 58 Union flags returned? I have been checking off that list and found a few that were lost at certain battles. Just maybe 1 or more flags are on that list from 1st Manassas.
