Wow you have done a ton of research on the 123rd New York. I also find that not to many regimental histories openly admit to reporting colors lost in a battle. Every once in awhile I will find a Union regimental history that mentions losing a flag. Maybe it was just out of pride that they never said anything about it.

With this case, the Colonel of the 7th North Carolina must have took the flag with him to his home. This is why I have never come across anything on the 123rd New York. If everyone followed the general orders of properly turning captured colors, are research would be so easy. But I like the hunt and finding "new" captured colors.

Now that makes me wonder how many more flags were never turned in and never heard from again.

You diffenitly found a rare flag. Thank you for the 20 years of hard work on the 123rd New York!
