This morning I had a conversation with Tom Belton, Curator of Military History here at NC Museum of History.. Tom feels as we all do, seldom does a regiment mention a lost flag and their loss pride. Conversely, we often see a report on a battle, official or otherwise, boasting of prisoners, artillery and flags captured.. Tom checked the Regimental and quite the contrary there is no mention of captured colors

In the”Presentation of Flags of the NY Regiments, July 4, 1865, to the Governor”it describes the three flags that Gen. James C. Rogers, Brevet of the 123rd turned over to the state

The first, National Flag, in ragged condition which was presented to the Regiment when it left Washington county in September.1862. It was used until February 1865.

Flag two, National Flag, original staff. This would appear to be the flag carried from February till June, 1865.

The Third, National Garrison Flag.

There was no indication of Regimental Banner.

Neither point allows us to come to a definitive conclusion. We simply have provided unanswered questions.

Be aware, I definitely have not “Found” the 123rd flag. If that were the case, I would be like a satellite blazing across the sky.
