Re: Polk County and A small but Spartan band

Jack:

Thanks for the kind words about the book. It was a labor of love, and knowing that people like yourself are enjoying it makes the work worthwhile.

A fellow named Bragg contacted me from Polk County several years ago (his name was Bragg, I think), who had done a lot of work on Co. E. (Nathan Blount's) company. I think they were almost exclusively from Polk County. They were a very good unit. I had an ancestor who was a sharpshooter in Co. D, 7th Florida. Co.s A, B, and K contained a great number of South Florida soldiers (Hillsboro and Manatee County). My favorite 7th Florida story is old Chaplain Edmond Lee, who was released from Johnson's Island in May/June 1865, and refusing to take the oath had to walk the whole way to Manatee County. He was a Presbyterian minister. My buddy, Jon Sheppard (who teaches at FSU) has completed his PhD. Dissertation on the Florida soldiers in the Army of Tennessee. Its called "By the Noble Daring of Her Sons." I hope he can get it published.
