This is interesting. The home guard captain I happened to study had retired from service as Lt. Col. of the 2nd Alabama Cavalry. Another retired officer who belonged to his company who was killed at home shortly after the war ended. As operations against bands of deserters became a more urgent due to the danger posed to the community, community leaders became more insistent that retired officers lead home guards.
