The Georgia in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Cobb Guards, GA Infantry/22 BN GA Heavy Artill

Jon --

Thanks for the invitation. I'm located in Phoenix AZ but hope to visit familiar places in Alabama and surrounding states some day.

The Fort Gaines mentioned is located in Georgia just across the river from Henry County. It's not the one near Mobile. Based on service files, I assume the "Cobb Guards" also served in the river defenses along the Chattahoochee River, fall of 1863.

ADAH doesn't have service files such as the record discussed form the 22nd Georgia Battn. The "Henry Mounted Rebels" was a state command raised for six months service. As you mentioned, state guard companies like the HMR were expected to provide law and order in a very lawless time.

Hollard didn't have to keep his parole to qualify for a pension. The state pension board had to confirm his claim of service by checking his Confederate service file. Failing that, he had to produce two bona-fide witnesses who could swear that he served as claimed.
