Re: Mooty's marker measurements

For those who may be interested I did not write the contract between the government and the Blue Ridge Marble Company because I did not want to be too lenghty. The first 600 hundred stones arrived at the Camp Chase Cemetery in May of 1908 and they were specifically of the Cherokee Marble. The first headstones delievered by the Blue Ridge Marble Company was to the Elmira prison cemetery in New York. I do not know if they were Kennesaw Marble or Cherokee Marble. Bids by the government were also put out to set the stones. At Camp Chase the lowest bid was .15 per stone and the highest was by William H. Knauss the author of the book "The Story of Camp Chase" for a bid on .98 cents per stone. It would also appear that the War Department used the Compiled Military Service Records to obtain the information about the soldiers (of course with the exception of the civilians) The CMSR's were started by General Ainsworth and staff in 1886. This may help explain why some of the information today is incorrect on many Confederate tombstones. Different pages on the same CMSR's contain different information at times.

If W.Y. and W.T. Mooty were the same person and the family did buy the stones, one has to ponder why they did not put the higher rank ie 2nd Lieutenant on his tombstone and list him as being with the 37th Georgia Militia. It sounds as though Tom will find some answers.
