Dennis and George, Thanks for the information. George I got a rough measurement from the ground to the top of the stone(where the taper starts) on each stone. Knowing that this measurement is not accurate, but close enough to give some indication of how deep they may be buried. Both stones were around 31" above ground. Which the buried depth would be somewhat less than the 22" that you buried the stones in Vicksburg, which may be the reason these stones are leaning.
It seems that William's stone dimensions are exactly what the contract called for. He died in 1911 and the dimensions were still the same as the markers for the Confederate graves in northern prisons, but we have no way of knowing the grade of the stone or where it might have been manufactured.
I called a Mooty in Florida last night, her being the wife of the only son my dad's friend had. She taught school for years and is retired. But she has not done any family research, and does not even know any member of the family that might know. Most of their family has died, but I did get one possible lead, and I will follow up on that one as soon as possible. It will be at least Tuesday before I can get to the archives in LaGrange. The SCV camp in LaGrange is inactive at this time, but the UDC here in Heard county is very active, so I might pay them a visit also.
It seems like I have ran into a headstone for a lady before, but I failed to make note of it, and I just cannot remember where it was. This is really getting interesting. thanks again, tom
