Re: Mooty's marker measurements

Dennis, I do not remember if anyone posted on the other thread about the Blue Ridge Marble Co. still being in existence or not. But by doing a Google search, I found that they are still in business. In 1917 the company was bought by Georgia Marble, but remained at the same location. In 2003 the plant closed and moved to Tate, Ga., but in 2006 the company reopened in Nelson as the Blue Ridge Marble and Granite Co. The website had a "contact us" tab, so I sent them a request for information, especially if they had records dating back to 1923. I doubt that any of that information is still available, considering the company sold in 1917, but if they do not have it the Georgia Marble Co. may have.
The following is from George's post about tombstones:
"On May 26, 1930, the War Department implemented regulations for Confederate headstones that also authorized the inscription of the Confederate Cross of Honor in a small circle on the front face of the stone above the standard inscription of the soldier's name, rank, company and regiment."
This may indicate that Mary's stone was bought after 1930, but also we know that William's stone was of the original dimensions from the 1908 contracts. His stone also has the Confederate Cross at the top. It is a pretty day here today, I think I am about to go out to some cemeteries and measure the headstones of Confederates, and just check to see how many of them have the Confederate Cross engraved at the top. Also the Confederate Cemetery in LaGrange has a lot of stones that were not federal issued. I might just wander off that way to just to see the differences.
If you will send me your email address, I will take a picture of William's and Mary's stones and send to you. email me at taw87ga@gmail.com
