Thanks - that answers my question about GMI. An Alabama soldier's CSR mentions education at GMI, but his records may or may not be available.

Having used the Register of the University of Alabama, 1831-1901 as a source of biographical and military information, it's finally dawned on me that similarly useful publications must exist. There must be dozens, if not hundreds of them for the antebellum and wartime period. Can I ask you for references along these lines?
