Re: Buster's Battalion
In Response To: Buster's Battalion ()

I would just like to add one more thing with regards to the messages regarding whether Buster's men were infantry. The Battle at Old Fort Wayne took place at Beattie's Prairie. If you go back and read the reports (O.R.)written after the battle, you will see that it was necessary for officers on both sides to order their men to dismount on that day. There was a section of heavy timber along the prairie and a fence. Lieutenant Colonel O.A. Bassett of the 2nd Kansas Volunteer Cavalry fought dismounted. Colonel Stand Watie ordered his men to fight dismounted. Circumstances called for the men to fight as infantry but don't forget, as soon as the retreat began, you can guarantee that Buster's men immediately returned to their mounts as they began their hasty retreat.
