Quite right, but we have to keep in mind that 146 men in Buster's Battalion at Old Fort Wayne were INFANTRY and had to head for the brush on foot when the Confederate formation broke up. Buster himself claimed that "My little handful of infantry stood to the last, which I cannot say of the mounted men . . . many of whom [ran] and never fired a gun." (Buster to Cooper, 4 Nov. 62, in SUPPLEMENT TO THE O.R., vol. 3, pp. 65-67.) A postbattle inquiry determined that "Buster's Battalion was scattered, and the men wandered off in every direction." (Hindman to Roane, 3 Nov. 62, in S.O.R., vol. 3, pp. 69-70.) Not surprising, really, considering that some were ahorse and some were afoot. Hope this helps to clarify matters.
