This is from "Missouri's Sons of the South",Vol 1 (taken from the pages of the Confederate Veteran Magazine 1893-1912. The author is Thomas S Barker. I don't have access to the CSRs of Clarkson's Bn, but am compiling a list of soldiers who served in Clark's Mo Inf that previously served in Clarkson's Bn. A Thomas Barker is listed in Co.'G'(Clark's Rgt) having been enlisted in Franklin County, Ark, by CPT Stone 1 May 1862. To qoute from pg 300(looks like a 1907 issue):

"After a while the Federals charged us, and captured our battery of four splendid guns and everything belonging to the battery except two teams of horses and two caissons. We were forced to run to avoid being captured. I had been sick and was not able to keep up with our retreating army, so I turned to the left and went into a deep hollow, where I was safe for the time being. One of my messmates, Frank Skaggs,...,said he would stay with me whatever our fate might be."

In a later paragraph-"...: two boys in a hostile Indian country, behind our retreating army, in front of the enemy, and hardly able to walk."

I agree that majority of Clarkson's Bn at Old Fort Wayne were dismounted, with only Cpt Minhart's Sqd mounted. I'm not sure when the battalion was dismounted- whether before or after Newtonia. I know about this time frame, MG Hindman was trying to dismount all cavalry except Shelby's Iron Bde and Bryan's Cherokee Bn.
