I found several references where I should have looked first -- in the ORs. Cabell was captain and AQM in early 1863 but later that year and early 1864 Gen Wm Steele and others refer to him a major and chief QM.

I wondering where he was prior to 1863. Maybe in his father-in-law's unit (which fought at Wilson's Creek and then disbanded in Sept 1861) or perhaps another Arkansas unit. I don't know if he continued as chief QM under Maxey.
