Colbert's Mill
In Response To: Colbert's Mill ()

Ken Martin,
.
Danny Knight is correct. ..Winchester Colbert lived near Frisco, before moving to the now Johnston Co OK area.
.
Warning. ..This is a dog-ate-my-homework story.
.
Over 20 years ago, my 4th Bourland cousin, Jessie Newal Hamill, sent her Hamill family info that included part of a transcript of a 1948 radio program about Winchester Colbert and the Colbert Institute.
.
I cannot find this radio station reference (with call letters) in my computer archives (yes, I've looked, looked longer than I care to admit). ..I did not include this "1948 transcrpt" in my Hamill family updates since it was more about Colbert than Hamill.

.
Winchester Colbert wrote the following letter to Col. James Bourland ca. March 1, 1863 in Tishomingo Co., I.T., (now Johnston Co OK):
.
Col. James Bourland:
.
Received by the hand of Rev. John N. Hamill and in answer I have to say that I have been making every effort to get ready to cooperate with our friends on the other side of Red River. ..The Legislature has made an appropriation of $6,750.00 for ammunition and subsistence. ..The amount is small, but it is all I could get. ..My Quarter Master will make his purchases as soon as possible. ..My express to Genl. [D.H.] Cooper has not yet returned, but when he does, I will let you know what Genl. Cooper says on the subject. ..I received a letter from Chief [T.B] Turnbull of the Choctaw Nation saying that they were preparing to cooperate with us, but that they have no [gun] powder and they did not know how or where to get any.
.
I have also sent an invitation to the commander at Caddo to especially return.

Please write me [express] __s from your side.

In Haste, Yours,

W. [Winchester] Colbert [Governor of the Chickasaw Nation, I.T.].
.
.
Editor's note:

Caddo. Before 1855, Caddo was a county of the Choctaw-Chickasaw District, I.T., after 1855 is was named Pontotoc County, commonly called 1855-1907 [Old] Pontotoc County. It was common for old timers to refer to [OLD] Caddo County by it's old name after the 1855 name change.

CSA Major George Washington of the Whitebead band of the Caddo Tribe of the old Caddo County, Chickasaw District, Choctaw-Chickasaw Nation, I.T. (now Garvin Co OK). per THE BOURLAND PAPERS.

P.S. Does anyone know what the Ada radio station's call letters were in 1948? ..That may help me find this radio station reference in my computer files.
