Re: Choctaw & Chickasaw Battalion

Capt Jonathan Nail, 1st Chickasaw Cavalry Battalion, Lt. Col. Lemuel Reynolds, was the "Nail's Company" at the Feb. 13, 1864 Battle of Middle Boggy. The Chickasaw Battalion was so named because it was raised for service in the Chickasaw Nation and was composed of Texans, Choctaw, and of course Chickasaw.

Jonathan Nail's younger brother, Adam, died in late 1861 or early 1862.

The troops at Middle Boggy were the Seminole Battalion and the Chickasaw Battalion. The 20th Texas Cavalry (Bass') were dismounted. I believe it was Maxey that referred to them as his "only infantry". They were at Boggy Depot at the time of the battle.

I don't know where the story comes from about Nail sending for Jumper and arriving after the battle. Phillips says he camped on the battlefield at Camp Kansas. I assume he camped "near" as opposed to "on" but they were still in the vicinity and moved south the next day to Camp Kagi on South Boggy (i.e. Clear Boggy).

I think the battle was fought just north of Middle Boggy south of Allen and that Camp Kagi was at Robert Cochran's on Clear Boggy near Pontotoc Courthouse and where the Dragoon Trail to Ft Washita and the Ft Smith-Ft Arbuckle road diverge.
