"Devil" John Wright

Greetings,

My GG grandfather Lt. John Litz, 22nd VA Cav, had as one of his wagon guides "Devil" John Wright. He was, among other things, the basis for the character "Devil" Judd Tolliver in the John Fox 1908 novel Trail of the Lonesome Pine. Litz was a POW at Camp Chase for most of the war, but I wonder what wartime role Wright subsequntly played. He was one of those larger than life Eastern KY mountain men:

Another mule skinner for Litz was a "Big Ben" Bates.

Does anyone know of the CW service or other facts rgarding these men?

Thanks,
Joe
