Doug:
The 12-month men of the 5th KY never made it as far as Russell County during the late fall of '61. When Humphrey Marshall was commissioned and came to Wytheville in early November, he, along with the 54th VA and an artillery battery, traveled to Tazewell County. He left those 2 units in Tazewell, then traveled to Lebanon, then to Castlewood [Russell County], then to Wise County where he met up with Jno. S. Williams and the 5th. Marshall did mention that the cavalry companies-- Shawhan, Clay, Thomas, and Holladay-- had withdrawn to Castlewood, 40 miles into Virginia, to forage their horses. From Wise County, Marshall and the 5th crossed Pound Gap into Kentucky and were joined near Paintsville around December 20 by the 54th and the artillery battery. Col. Moore's 29th Virginia made it into camp just before the end of the year.
Have a good one,
Randall Osborne
