You would do well to order his military service file through the message board service advertised above. This young man volunteered at Hopkinsville KY, Sept 1, 1862, reenlisted when the regiment reorganized at Williamsburg TN, Dec 9, 1862. Most members did not, so only enough men for one or two companies were left. He was captured at Charleston TN, Dec 28, 1863, and sent to a hospital at Nashville TN and treated for pneumonia. Once released he was sent to Rock Island prison. JWS volunteered for US service at Rock Island, Oct 24, 1864, was rejected and released from prison.
If I'm not mistaken the remanant of the regiment which reorganized in December 1862 served with Forrest in his West Tennessee raid.
