>>>>However, You say in a previous post that Woodward officially raised the 2nd (would be 15th) KY on Dec 9 1862. I have confirmed
this date with other sources. You then went on to say that the 15th participated in West Tenn. raid of 1862 and fought at Parker's crossroads with
In Forrest's order of battle for the West Tennessee and KY raid of December 1862 Woodward's troops were listed as Woodward's KY Battalion - and there was only two companies on the raid. My source has the 2nd KY (Woodward's) being raised in January 1863 - and no doubt these two companies became part of that. This goes to show how sloppy Woodward's paperwork was - which helped get him cashiered in 1864.
>>>In this post you say that he did not raise the 2nd/15th KY until January 1863 and it did not exist at the end of 1862. >>>>>
See the above.
>>May I ask for clarification on the details of the 2nd/15th. I have an ancestor who is recorded to have enlisted Dec. 9th 1862 at Williamsport TN with
Woodwards 2nd/15th KY Cav. Co. B. >>>
This would have actually been Woodward's KY Battalion of two companies so Co. A and Co. B makes sense for this time frame. The other eight companies do not become part of this command until early 1863.
>>>His brother enlisted in June-July 1862 and served in Woodwards 2nd Co. D with Morgan's raiders. You say when they were asked to enlist for 3 years, it was
disbanded however a letter written by my ancestor claims that "the whole group immediately reenlisted". It then says by 1863 Co. D was under the command of
Given Campell of Trigg County and then assigned under the command of Forrest and saw action at Lexington Jackson and Humboldt Miss. >>>
I think you have this confused with the 1st Kentucky Cavalry (Helms') which was a one year regiment and included Woodward's Oak Grove Rangers Battalion of three companies. When their enlistments expired in July 1862, Woodward left the regiment along with a number of his men and in July formed his Woodard's KY Battalion which accordin to the KY Adjutant General's records held this name until January 1863 when they morphed into the 2nd KY Cavalry (Woodward's).
Hope this helps. And welcome to the wacky world of Tom Woodward's commands!
