He was probably held in what was then the Fulton County Georgia Jail, it was near the Chattahochee River. The river was not damned anywhere all the way to the Gulf of Mexico in those days. The Andrews Raiders were held in that same jail and some of them did escape and made it all the way to the Union Fleet in the Gulf of Mexico. They of course were the ones who stole the "General."
