Matthew, how would a country that just came into existense with no standing army have a difference between a regular army and a volunteer army. In 1861 every soldier that the South had was a volunteer. Was there a cut off year with everyone that volunteered before that date being the regular army and everyone that joined after that date became a volunteer?
I can see this on the northern side as they had a standing regular army before the war started and everyone that joined after the war started was a volunteer.
I can also see this with the south, with state militia units volunteering for confederate service. Then these militia units would become regular army.
