Re: Frenchmen in the American Civil War

Company "A" of the 12th Alabama Regiment was the "Garde LaFayette" of Mobile, Ala. Members mustered in Confederate service there on June 4, 1861, enrolling June 11, 1861. The company captain was Georges Heully, followed by Jules A. Ledtondal. The regiment served in the Army of Northern Virginia throughout its career.

Company "H" of the 21st Alabama Regiment was the "Mobile French Guards" of Mobile, Ala. Entering state service January 19, 1861, members reorganized under Capt. Augustus Poitevin on June 2, 1861. They held elections for Confederate service on Oct. 12, 1861, for which officers received commissions three days later. The company captain elected at that time was Charles L. A. DeVaux, wounded at Shiloh, Tenn., April 6, 1862.

Enlisted men transferred to the 1st Louisiana Regiment (Regulars) on June 27, 1862. Doubtless most members of both companies were natives of France.

The Mobile Advertiser and Register ran this notice on May 11, 1862:

Attention – Gardes Consulaire Francaise!
>>> Reunion LUNDI a 5 heures P.M., en cignure Royal et Gouvernement, sans arme en uniforme, par ordre du Capitaine.
May 11 JULES SANDOZ, S.M.

This notice appreared on May 15th:

Attention – Gardes Consulaire Francaise!
Assemblee General JEUDI 15 courant, a 4 heures precise a sois chez lieutenant Pillichody, Water street.
May 14 Capt. BROD

The typeset is quite small and difficult to read; I make errors and perhaps the typesetter did as well. There are several other notices like this during the spring of 1862.

The published census of the United States for 1860 will report the number of persons born in France who lived in each state.

The "Virginia Marseillaise" was a popular war song. Here's a link to original sheet music:
