Re: 1st. Mo.Cav. 1st. Mo.Brig. CSA

Dear Judy,

Because you mention "Madison County" it causes me to wonder about the "exact" name of the unit your ancestor enlisted in. In the Broadfoot Roster of Confederate Soldiers and on the NARA Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System there is a J.M. Ross listed as a member of the 2nd Northeast Missouri Cavalry Battalion (CS). This unit was later merged with the 1st Northeast Missouri Cavalry Battalion (CS) and for a time was the 1st Northeast Missouri Cavalry Regiment (CS). Later the 1st Northeast Missouri Cavalry Regiment (CS)became Franklin's 7th Missouri Infantry Regiment (CS). Could you go back and look at the book "Civil War Soldiers of Madison County, Missouri" by Geraldine Sanders Smith and see if these "Northeast" Missouri units are mentioned?

I'm grasping at straws, but a large number of men from Madison and nearby counties were a part of the 1st Northeast Missouri Cavalry Regiment and subsequently the 7th Missouri Infantry.

Maybe others can comment on this hypothesis (guess?).
