Richard, Your information regarding Major Thomas R. Livingston's 1st Missouri (Indian Brigade) Calvary Battalion makes the most sense, so far, in regards to what I know about James M. Ross and also his brothers. With Livingston raising this command in Southwestern Missouri (including Newton Co. where James M. Ross lived at the time he enlisted and it being a Indian Brigade, which the family seems to have been associated with since living in Alabama and then combine it with the unit serving with Cooper's Indian command and frequently cooperating with Stand Watie's 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifle Regiment makes it seem most likely that this is the unit my gg-grandfather was in. With there not being many records or rosters of this unit would also account for not being able to find him on a roster. It has been said the Ross family is part Indian. How it's connected, I don't know and they possibly are related to the Chief, John Ross. It's the only reason we can think of that the other three brothers would be in Indian Units. When did Major Livingston die. It's possible all the brothers or maybe some of them also started out in this unit and after his death, eventually enlisted in other Indian units and/or Texas units. This information would also make the statements in his obituary and from the book "Civil War Soldiers of Madison County Missouri and Surrounding Areas" correct in stating he was with the 1st Missouri Cavalry.
