Some of the units were just home guards but some per the regimental histories saw quite a bit of service fighting the CSA in other states. Of course the 1st Al was the most famous but the 1st Ark seemed preety hard core and apparently a lot of Tenn Cav USV units were also hard core. It appears that the Southeners from hilly counties that had somewhat poor soil or were not particularly wealthy did not care for slave owners and were willing to sit the Civil war out but the CSA needed warm bodies and would no take no for answer.
