Fighting irregular war does not lead has Terry very well put to gentlemenly behavior . I suspect some Union units were better at fighting Bushwackers and adhering to the rules of war then others. Some of Quantrills men at lawerence refused to massacre men and boys in cold blood although most did not. Leslies bookos into that in detail and Brownlees book gos into detail about how some Union Gens wanted to court martial Jennisson and Lane but they could not.

No doubt Linclon would be a racist by modern standards. However Afro-Americans were more then happy with the Emancipation Proclamation and the chance to join Union forces and let the CSA forces really get an idea how they felt about the wonderful institution of slavery. Also Linclons thought on Afro-Americans was changing who knows how far they would of changed had he not been asassinated.

Bleeding Kansas just refers to the fighting between the aboloitionsits and the pro slave forces from 1856 to 1860.
