I have been in touch with another of Henderson's, descendants, Terry Henderson, and he was also helpful setting Francis G. Henderson's place in the Civil War history of that region of northeast Missouri. His was a tragic story indeed.

I agree that the press and Union military called Henderson by many wrong names. However, there was a real Joe Cole who was also a guerrilla leader in that area. Joe was in his middle twenties when the war started and carried on his own brand of guerrilla warfare in mostly Montgomery and Callaway Counties from the summer of 1861 until local militiamen of the 67th EMM killed him near Portland on 1 December 1863.
