Mr. Nichols, or anyone with access to the "POW book", could you see if there is a citizen prisoner named James S Bell in that book? Provost Marshall file 20197. This letter is all I've been able to find. James S Bell is believed to have died in custody in 1865.
"Henry Bell being of lawfull age deposeth and saith. That I am a brother of James S Bell who is now in the Mil Prison of St Louis and consider him a loyal man. And always professed to be such to me; He belongs to the E.M.M. and answered to every call that was made on him.

James S Bell enrolled in the 68th EMM in Apr of 1862, but his card says 'no service'. He also registered for the draft in 1863 from Reynolds Co.
We sure would like to know what happened to him.
Thanks
