Re: Ship Island Prison
In Response To: Re: Ship Island Prison ()

Barbara,

I have the following on A. J. Butts:

420. Butts, J. A.
Private
Company D
63rd Alabama Infantry
Captured t Fort Blakeley on April 9, 1865
Transferred to Ship Island, Mississippi
Letter Mark 1220H
Transferred to Vicksburg, Mississippi on May 1, 1865
Letter Mark 1308 6/H

I found this information on the National Archives Records Administration Microfilm entitled "Selected Records of the War Department Relating to Confederate Prisoners of War, 1861-1865. M598. 145 rolls."

J. A. Butts appears in "Ship Island, Miss. Roll 136, Volume 406-408 Register of Prisoners and miscellaneous records."

His information is found in Volume 406, Page 27, Number 420.

He was the 420th out of 521 prisoners whose last name began with “B” listed.

If you have any letters or writings J. A. Butts may have written regarding his time during the Civil War I'd be interested in seeing a copy.

I have not gotten to the “S” list but will post any information I find on Malachi Stabler.

Best Wishes,

Greg
