My ancestor, Michael Vaughn, received several CS pensions in the 1910s-1920s in Scott County, MS. Through the pension years, his reported service history varied and is as follows:
***Enlisted 1862 Marengo County, AL in 3rd Tennessee Infantry Engineer Corps, Colonel Denson and Captain Jones of Company G.
***Enlisted 1862 Scott County, MS in 3rd Mississippi (Infantry, etc. not named) under Colonel Denson and Captain Jones of either Company A or Company G.
Discharged at surrender in Meridian, MS.
At the start of the war, Vaughn (should) have been living in Scott County, MS so I can't reconcile him living in Ma Marengo County, AL or joining a Tennessee regiment. Do you think he may have never enlisted at all?
The only record I can find (from the Compiled service records) to collaborate any of this is a Colonel Deason of the 3rd MS Infantry which formed in the same area of Mississippi that Vaughn lived in.
I cannot find any service record for Mr. Vaughn. Did the state try to verify the claimed service histories prior to allowing a pension?
Thoughts or suggestions on where to look next?
Thanks,
Scott
