Re: The Cause of the War

You know they may not have been called "War Crimes", but there were codes of conduct in conducting war among civilized nations in the mid 1800's. Lee and others protested the conduct of the Union Army and it leaders for not abiding by those codes it their war against the southern people.

Now I will agree that the industrial complex that supports an army is just as legitimate a military target as is the army itself. But If Lee had followed the example of Sherman, Sheridan and others, I wonder how many northern town would have been a piles of ashes?

Chambersburg, Pa.
Hagerstown, Md
Harpers Ferry, Va.
Frederick, Md
Gettysburg, Pa
Sharpsburg, Md
Hanover, Pa
Cashtown, Pa.
Middletown, Pa.
Heidlesberg, Pa.
Carlisle, Pa.
Williamsport, Md.
Emmitsburg, Pa.
McConnellsburg, Pa.
Greencastle, Pa.
Shepardstown, Md.
Shippenburg, Pa.
and that is not all of them depending on where old Jeb went.

And we're only talking about in one campaign in the summer of 1863 alone. Yet Lee restrained his army and did not let them run wild like a band of heatherns, thieves, arsonist and murderers as the Union commander did in the name of moral rightiousness.
