Re: Favorite Battlefield?

Yes, I have the book and loved reading it...That was one reason I went to Carnton. Robert Hicks the author of "The Widow of the South", was there and was signing his book. I was lucky enough to talk to him and get my book signed. He was very nice and I wish I had read the book, before I talked with him. I think it is much more fact than fiction. Most of the people he wrote about were real people and I'm told the character of "Cotton" was actually "Tod Carter". Who do you think the Cashwell figure was? I'm not sure but I think he was also fashioned after someone Carrie McGavock knew in real life. It was Carrie picture hanging over the fireplace, that I kept going back to look at. She wore a black dress and it quoted that this is the only color she ever wore. She lived a sad life and thanks to her... all those confederate men were moved from the battlefield and re-buried there at Carnton. Lochlainn Seabrook, has written a book about the "Carnton Plantation",and it's Ghost Stories. He is a decendant of the McGavock family who owned Carnton , also a tour guide there for several years he explains in his book. He is also a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. If I'm not mistaken they keep up the grounds of the Cemetery there. I do know that The Daughters of Confederate Veterans, bought the Carnton house when it was in ruins, after the last McGavock left there. Not sure but I think they still own it today.
