He served in the National Guard during the Black Hawk War to avoid going to Vietnam.

He was a homosexual.

He was a simple country lawyer that came out of nowhere to go to the heights of the political power...just to free the slaves.

He taught himself to read, by the light of a fireplace, in the cabin he was born in, that he built.

He maybe all the things you said but he was successful and won the war he started.
