They were already suffering and dying. The infighting was nothing new and the additional stresses from the influx of the White man and his diseases added to the problem. There was no way to stop anything that was in motion. The problem was the deliberate attacks and killing because of the greed of the White man. We know we benefitted from it but some of us have also lost because of it.
While the Southern states were not the only ones affected by the 'land grab' they certainly made some of the largest gains with the Indians gone.
How many would have been there to fight in the Seminole Wars if there had not been Horseshoe Bend? Why were treaties broken so often by the Great White Chief? We know these answers and it should make us hang our heads.
Yes, Andrew Jackson was a great man. He could have this status without the Indian actions he was responsible for.
It makes me wonder---if the Indian had been allowed to remain in at least some of their land, what would the Confederate States have looked like? Would there have been more soldiers to fight for the Confederacy because of the number of Indians who may have been a part of it? Would some of the action the South got the worst part of been different if there were Indians doing things 'their way' in the fighting department?
In context, with the timing, we can only guess. The Indians were not too trusting of the white government no matter what geographic location its capitol was in. We see what happened after the WBTS. We also know Lincoln's stand on getting them out of sight of the settlements. It's not a pretty picture and one I cannot defend even if my ancestors did play a part in it. Other ancestors were the victims. Some days I swear there is a genetic war going on in my body. The Scots say one thing, the Spanish another. Poor Indian shakes his head and a tear falls down his cheek. it could well have been a different Southland had we not been such bullies and so greedy.
