We are the sum total of those ancient parts aren't we?
As a youngun I too admired Andy Jackson. Thought he was as close as they came to General Washington. As you know, Pensacola and West Florida owe it's addition into the US to Andy. He was a frequent resident, though Rachel hated it here, and so did Davey Crockett. We have Jackson Street, statues, squares and a resturant in his honor. Regardless of some of the tales, I do believe he was a man of honor. He loved his wife and he served his homeland well.
On the other side of the picture, there's another viewpoint. One can see how much damage was done to the Indians and their culture due to his direct involvement. True, he was acting on orders and if not Jackson, it would have been another. This doesn't remove the taint though. As an Indian, how could one truly trust this person? The Cherokee did and you see what happened to them. The Creek and Seminole were on the recieving end of his anger. Many forget that there were many old, infirm people, women and children in the places he destroyed. Is that any different than say Sand Creek? Only in the graphic details maybe.

Sort of compares with the quandry on how one feels on the WBTS. You can see both sides but you have to choose one. We have to admire our ancestor for any decision they made on which side to choose. It had to be difficult for most. I know when I see a picture of Robert E. Lee, I see dignity and grace for he made his choice and didn't back down. He lost as much as any in the choosing and I'd bet he could see both sides point of view.
