That's one reason we photogs sometimes wore civvies; it's kind of difficult to salute with your hands full of camera, tripod, etc. On Naval vessels, except for the Captain, officers are saluted only upon first sighting each day. After that, a nod and greeting is de rigeur.

Colonel, I know what you mean about Belvoir. One February morning I was out there to shoot a test of a one man hot air baloon; the brass attendant almost made the heater redundant! The test pilot got underway, and gained some altitude. Unfortunately, he apparently hit a wind gust, and unceremoniously his baloon turned horizontal and dropped him to the snow, catching fire in the process. Luckily, he wasn't hurt, but we heard no more about reviving hot air baloons for military use. LOL Stan
