I've done a lot of research on the 3rd Arkansas Regiment, which was in Walker's Brigade, D. H. Hill's Division, at Sharpsburg, and have seen a couple of good accounts of the fighting at the Sunken Road. The 3rd Arkansas and 27th North Carolina were posted behind the fence on the west side of the road, and ground the Federal assault to a halt, then charged across the road and scattered the Union troops back to the rear, but were themselves halted at the Clipp house and forced to fall back.
The 3rd Arkansas had a mediocre reputation until the fight at Sharpsburg. They earned their spurs there, and were subsequently assigned to Hood's old brigade, where they served with great honor to the end of the war.
